Disease

Beech leaf disease banding is visible only until leaf drop — look up through backlit canopies on every beech this week and map what you find. Now confirmed across roughly 15 states from Maine to Michigan to Virginia, including much of Maryland.

Blight

Boxwood blight conditions arrive with cool, wet fall weather — know it from box tree moth damage: blight brings black stem streaks and rapid defoliation with no chewing or webbing. Sanitize tools between properties.

Invasive

SLF egg masses accumulate through first hard frost — keep scraping and inspecting equipment. HWA wool checks continue on every hemlock; Michigan stands at 11 infested counties.

Turf

White grub curative window is closing as soils cool and grubs dig down — sample suspect turf now (>8–10/sq ft) and treat immediately, or bank it for a spring preventive program instead.

Mite

Spruce spider mite stays in its cool-season window on conifers — tap-test alongside HWA checks; fall-rate oil handles both mites and adelgids in one pass where labels align.

How we report growing degree days

Growing degree days accumulate from January 1 and only climb through the season. Each region's reading is anchored to the latest measured cooperative-extension station data (base 50°F), so figures track real, on-the-ground heat rather than the calendar. Because published station data can lag by a week or two, always confirm against your nearest local station (NEWA, Enviroweather, or your state tool) before timing an application.

Beech Leaf Disease

Litylenchus crenatae mccannii (nematode)

This week's pest on the chart, because its evidence is about to fall off the trees. Beech leaf disease — driven by an invasive foliar nematode that overwinters inside beech buds — announces itself as dark interveinal bands, best seen by looking up through a backlit canopy. Leaves thicken, curl leathery, and drop early; buds abort; and mortality follows in roughly 2–7 years, fastest in smaller trees. Since its 2012 Ohio discovery it has spread to roughly 15 states plus Ontario — from Maine to Michigan down to Virginia, with much of Maryland now positive — and new research shows infected trees burning through stored carbohydrates, which is why repeat infections grind them down. Symptoms are readable from bud-break until October leaf drop: this is the year's last scouting window.

Report finds outside known areas to your state forest health program, and don't move beech seedlings, leaf litter, or firewood off infected sites. For high-value landscape beech, be straight with clients: there is no proven cure — phosphite applications support tree vitality but haven't been shown to reduce nematode populations, a few products are licensed in some states with efficacy research still underway, and the strongest play is supporting carbohydrate reserves (water, mulch, fall root-zone care) while monitoring yearly. Where beech dominates, start succession planting now rather than after the canopy fails.

The tell vs. box tree moth: blight shows black stem streaking and rapid defoliation with zero chewing or webbing. Trees push a major root flush as soils cool — which means uptake for your treatments and fresh feeder roots for the pathogens. Time both sides of that ledger this week.

Treatment Timing

Protective applications ride the flush — fall root growth makes this the season's best window for phosphite drenches or injections on high-value trees near known Phytophthora ground, and for the soil-applied systemics on your fall program — protective before infection, never curative after.

Mapping

Armillaria & Ganoderma continue — keep photographing and logging basal mushroom clusters and fresh conks into tree records — PNW rains just opened that region's fruiting season, and every find is a free diagnosis feeding winter risk and removal proposals.

Sanitation

Leaf drop is inoculum drop — BLD-symptomatic beech litter, tar spot maples, and scabby crabapples all shed next year's disease pressure this month. Where disease is confirmed, rake and dispose on-site or via disposal — don't compost it back into the beds, and don't haul beech litter off infected properties.
